The company Mathieu, famous surgical instrument manufacturer was founded in 1847 by MATHIEU Louis-Joseph (1817-1879), Belgian craftsman, born in Belgrade, a district of Namur. Louis-Joseph opened his own business in 1847 at 7 Rue Poitevin, then he set up shop at the very end of Rue de l'École de Médecine, then 28 Rue de l'Ancienne-Comédie, Paris, in 1862. In 1871, he was at 16 Carrefour de l'Odéon, after he moved to 2, Rue de l'Odéon, then at 113 Boulevard Saint-Germain – also nearby, just next door. He recruited Dieudonné Simal, who soon opened his own business. Mathieu had two sons who succeeded him after his death.
